…hello and welcome to Weekend Liner Notes.
Today a live performance by the legendary cabaret singer Bobby Short.
A fixture at the historic Hotel Carlyle in New York City for nearly four decades, Short was the quintessential entertainer.
Short had a lifelong love affair with what he called, “The Great American Song.” From Ellington to Cole Porter, from Rodgers and Hart to Harold Arlen and Gershwin, he embraced them all.
Our tune from yet another New York icon, Stephen Sondheim, is from the 1971 production of “Follies.”
“Losing My Mind,” whether on stage or in a small club on the Upper East Side, is your basic show stopper.
Introduced by Mary Lee Hoganson in her role as Sally Durant Plummer in the original Broadway musical.
I happen to believe that this is one of the finest, most evocative set of lyrics in “The Great American Songbook.”
And the attached recording is a very special voice in a very special place.
“The sun comes up, I think about you
The coffee cup, I think about you.
I want you so, it’s like I’m losing my mind”.
The attached recording is of a special voice in a very special place.
“The morning ends, I think about you
I talk to friends, and think about you.
And do they know it’s like I’m losing my mind”
Enjoy

We will pay a belated tribute to the beginning of summer. OK, I know I’m late but it’s been hot.
Our pal Giacomo Gates will join us to discuss Gershwin’s classic tune “Summertime” and bring us up to date on what’s happening in the Jazz world .
Giacomo is always an interesting interview and he certainly knows his stuff.
We will talk with fine young guitar virtuoso, Alexis Glick. A terrific player with a new, very tasty CD
I will take a moment to review the Irving Pen photographic exhibition at the de Young Museum. And trust me it’s fabulous.
Finally weekend liner notes will feature the extraordinary Tom Russell with a tune that is nothing heart breaking.

…good show this week.
We talk a good deal about New Orleans. Sometimes, in fact, I feel like a spokesperson for “The Big Easy.” Which is fine with me.
New Orleans is a great American city. From the French Quarter and the National World War II Museum to the wonderful cuisine, it is the vacation destination.
We will chat with our pal John Fitzpatrick concierge at The Eliza Jane about the city’s history, future and past along with filling us in on this world class venue.
Dr. John will make a “House Call” to talk about the return of an old nemesis.
Finally weekend, lighter notes will pay tribute to the “Wizard of Oz” with the performance you need to hear from the wonderful Mandy Patinkin.

…good show this week.
We’re going to remember the GOAT, Willie Mays with his friend, Jeff Idelson former President of The Baseball Hall of Fame.
Jeff has been an important part of this show for a long time and when I called him to talk about Willie, he said he would be delighted. Trust me, we are delighted as well.
If you think this is a show about baseball, think again. Mays was as much San Francisco as Tony Bennett as much New York as Frank Sinatra.
His passing this week has had a profound effect on countless folks from fans to non-fans alike. From millennials to octogenarians. It promises to be a compelling chat. I suggest you keep some tissues near.
Weekend Liner Notes will feature Allen Toussaint with a performance from the film “The Hit Man.”

… good show this week.
Good and timely. Since we marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday, we will spend the program doing our own salute to Those who serve our nations with a visit from the folks at the Veterans Transition Center of California.
Our friend Lisa Kincaid, the Development Director for the center will be in studio with vet Ed Spoon. We will chat about the marvelous work they do and talk about the upcoming Celebration of Freedom event on July 4 at Rancho Cielo.
There will be great food, great music and even a private flyover by the great Sean Tucker and that’s a lot of “Greats.” It promises to be a wonderful day benefiting a terrific cause.
We will also try to squeeze in a bit of Houston Person on Weekend Liner Notes
